Residual ACT Tests at Boise State

Degree-seeking undergraduate applicants to Boise State University are required to submit ACT or SAT scores unless the applicant is 21 years of age prior to the first day of classes, has already completed 14 semester credit hours of college work, possesses a bachelor's degree, is an Applied Technology major or is an international student.

If you need to take the ACT to complete your application file, it is to your advantage to do so as soon as possible. The sooner you complete the admission process, the earlier you will be able to register for classes.

Residual Test Definition

ACT tests are offered by Boise State to be used for Boise State admission purposes only. Score reports will not be sent to other colleges or universities. Therefore, if you plan to attend another institution or participate in intercollegiate athletics, you must take the national ACT test.

Admission to these tests is by reservation only. To reserve a seat, you can complete our online reservation form or print and mail the reservation form to the Boise State Admissions Office.

SCORES:

Test scores will be reported 5-8 business days after the test.

TIME:

Testing begins at 9 a.m. Arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. to check in. The test takes 5.5 hours.

ITEMS TO BRING:

Photo identification. You will not be admitted to the testing room without photo ID.
Test fee of $50 (check payable to Boise State or exact amount of cash, no pre-payments).
Two soft-lead No. 2 pencils.
Calculator. Calculators are permitted for the math test; see additional information below.

PARKING:

All parking lots are by permit only. You may park in special lots as indicated in a reservation confirmation letter. Arrive early at the testing location to confirm where to park.

National ACT

The National ACT test is also administered at Boise State. For more information about test dates, costs and registrations, view www.ACTstudent.org. Registration packets may be obtained from your local high school or the following Boise State offices: Admissions (Administration Building room 101), New Student Information Center (Student Union Building) or the Boise State Counseling Center (Taylor Hall room B103).

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT USING CALCULATORS ...

Q: Why are calculators allowed?

A: The ACT Assessment has always reflected high school curriculum and instruction. The results of surveys of calculator use in high schools nationwide indicate that calculators are now used in the vast majority of high school mathematics courses across the country. The decision to allow calculators is consistent with this practice in math instruction. Recent ACT research has shown that the use of calculators on the Mathematics Test does not affect score interpretation.

Q: Will a calculator be provided for me?

A: No. If you wish to use a calculator on the Mathematics Test, you are responsible for bringing one to the test.

Q: What type of calculator should I use?

A: If you choose to use a calculator, use one with which you are familiar. You may use any four-function, scientific, or graphing calculator--provided it has none of the features listed in the answer to the next question.

Q: What types of calculators are prohibited?

A: You may not use a calculator that has any of the following features: pocket organizers, handheld or laptop computers, electronic writing pads or pen-input devices, models with a QWERTY (typewriter) keypad, models with paper tapes, models that make noise, models that can communicate (transfer data or information) wirelessly with other calculators, or models that require a power cord.

Q: What if I don't have a calculator or don't typically use one?

A: You can take the Mathematics Test without a calculator. It might be unwise to use a calculator if you don't typically use one in math class or for math assignments. All of the questions can be answered without a calculator.

Q: May I share a calculator during the test?

A: No. Sharing calculators is not permitted.

Q: What if my calculator stops working during the test?

A: Continue taking the test without a calculator. Check your calculator before the test to make sure it's in good working order and the batteries will last the entire test. You may also bring a backup calculator and/or spare batteries.
